All persons entering the Cemetery grounds for whatever reason must display proper respect for the deceased and for the burial grounds and buildings in which they are interred.  Medford Cemetery Association, Inc., may take such measures as the circumstances warrant to ensure strict observance of this basic principle.  Following is a summary of the Cemetery Rules and Regulations, which all persons are required to follow:

General Information:

  • The Cemetery is not responsible for any personal item(s) of any kind left at a Gravesite, Crypt or Niche.

  • All interments, entombments and inurnments will be performed by the Cemetery and require 48 hours notice.

  • The Cemetery reserves the right to make changes to the layout of its grounds, Mausoleum and Columbarium.

  • No sale or transfer of an interment or inurnment space is valid unless the transfer has been both approved by and recorded by the Cemetery.  All transfers must be in conformance with N.J.S.A. 45:27-13b.

  • When a person drives any vehicle into, in or through the Cemetery grounds, or over the private roads leading into the same, the following rules must be strictly observed.

    • PARKING ON THE LAWN/GRASS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

    • No vehicle shall ever be parked upon or drive over any Grave, Lot, Plot or Lawn.

    • Where parking on one side of the road is permitted, the vehicle must be parked parallel to and at the edge of the roadway.

    • Where parking is permitted, the vehicle should not be parked at such location or in such a position as to prevent any other vehicle from remaining on the roadway and passing the same; and if so parked or left, the Cemetery reserves the right to remove the vehicle without liability.

    • No vehicle shall ever be driven at a speed exceeding 15 miles per hour.

    • When a lesser speed limit is posted, such lower limit must be observed.

    • “U” turns are prohibited at all times.

  • Persons within the Cemetery grounds shall use only the corridors and facilities within the Mausoleum and the avenues, walks and roads providing access thereto.  The Cemetery shall have no liability to any person injured while using any portion of the Cemetery grounds.

  • Food or beverages of any kind are not permitted on the Cemetery grounds or within the Mausoleum.

  • The lighting of candles or incense is not permitted within the Cemetery grounds or within the Mausoleum.

  • Smoking is not permitted on the Cemetery grounds or within the Mausoleum.

  • All persons are prohibited from climbing trees and fences; and from leaping, crossing over, sitting or lounging on Graves, Crypts, Niches or monuments located on Cemetery grounds or in the Mausoleum.

  • All persons who willfully violate any of the Cemetery Rules and Regulations or who trespass upon the Cemetery grounds shall be ejected from the grounds and forbidden thereafter to enter therein.  All such persons shall be liable for any damage done by them.

  • With exception of Service Animals, animals of any kind will not be permitted in the Cemetery or Mausoleum.

  • No signs of any kind or advertisements in any form are allowed on or near the Cemetery grounds or Mausoleum.  The Cemetery will remove any signs or advertisements and will dispose of the same, as it deems appropriate.

  • The Cemetery reserves the right to remove and discard without notice any such objects brought into and left within the Cemetery grounds, Mausoleum or Columbarium in violation of these Rules and Regulations.

Graves:

  • A Grave means a place for underground disposition of human remains or cremated human remains.  A Grave may included spaces for the disposition of human remains of more than one person.  The number of human remains allowed to be interred in a Grave is set forth in the Grave Grant.

  • A Cemetery approved vault is required for all full in-ground interments and a Cemetery approved vault is required for disposition in a grave, of an urn or other vessel containing cremated human remains.

  • All urns or other vessels housing cremated human remains must have a nameplate or inscription identifying, by full name and date of death, the individual whose cremated human remains are contained in the urn or other vessel.

  • The Cemetery must approve all Grave monuments/headstones.  As the width of all interment spaces is 36 to 39 inches, the maximum width of a monument/headstone for a single grave should not exceed 32 inches, or 32 inches per grave within family plots.  As most headstone rows in Park View Cemetery at Kirby’s Mill and some headstone rows in Park View Cemetery at Historic Medford Village have headstones that are located back to back, any engraving on the back of a headstone must be approved by the cemetery.  If engraving is approved by the cemetery, the cemetery is not responsible if at a later date the engraving is blocked by another headstone directly behind the headstone with the approved writing on the back.

  • The Cemetery must approve all engraving including, but not limited to, the addition of date of death and any additional engraving to the monument/headstone.  The Cemetery will not approve any engraving for a loved one when their remains have not been interred unless any and all grave opening charges have been paid.

  • No monuments/headstones can contain cremated human remains.

  • All monument/headstones require the installation of a foundation which will be constructed by the Cemetery, unless otherwise approved by the Cemetery.

  • Fresh or artificial flowers are permitted on outside Gravesites throughout the year and MUST be placed only in Cemetery approved vases.

  • All fresh or artificial flowers when wilted, dead, faded or unsightly will be removed and disposed of by the Cemetery, as it deems best without any notice or any liability.  The Cemetery assumes no responsibility for any flowers left at a Gravesite.

  • Wreaths and Grave blankets are welcome on outside Gravesites on or about Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day and Christmas, but are not permitted on Crypts, Niches or in or near the Mausoleum or Columbarium.  Items will be removed (10) days after these special days and the Owner or Visitor forfeits all right, title and interest therein and the Cemetery may dispose of them, without notice, as it sees fit.

  • Trees, shrubs, flowering bushes or plantings of any kind are not allowed on Gravesites.  Beds of stone, concrete, gravel, metal, plastic or fencing of any kind are not allowed on or near Gravesites.  The Cemetery will remove and discard any such items without notice.  The owner of the Gravesite, where a violation of this regulation takes place, will be assessed the expense of removal and restoration, and will incur a $500.00 violation penalty.

  • Only Cemetery approved U.S. Flags or Veteran Markers are permitted to be displayed on Graves.  All U.S. Flags that are faded or unsightly will be removed and properly disposed of without notice by the Cemetery, as it deems appropriate.

  • Flat bronze Veteran Markers require a foundation that must be installed by the Cemetery.

Crypts:

  • A Crypt means an interment space in a Mausoleum or other structure.  Crypts include spaces for the interment of human remains.  The number of human remains allowed to be interred in a Crypt is set forth in the Crypt Grant.

  • A Cemetery approved casket protector is required for all mausoleum crypt entombments.

  • Nothing shall be attached to the front of any Crypt without Cemetery approval.

  • The Cemetery must perform all engravings of Crypt fronts.

  • No photographs of any kind are allowed on the front of any Crypt, except photographs installed by the Cemetery.

  • The Cemetery will perform all entombments into a Crypt.

  • Fresh flowers or plants, candles or candlesticks, incense, statuettes, religious objects, balloons or any other adornments of any kind are not permitted in or around the Mausoleum or Columbarium.  Only adornments approved and installed by the Cemetery are permitted in or around the Mausoleum or Columbarium.

  • Only artificial flowers are permitted in the Mausoleum throughout the year, provided they are placed in Cemetery approved vases.  Wire and ribbon are not permitted to be attached to any Crypt front or used anywhere within the Mausoleum.

  • All artificial flowers that are faded or unsightly will be removed and disposed of by the Cemetery, as it deems appropriate without any notice or any liability.  The Cemetery assumes no responsibility for any flowers left at a Crypt.

  • Wreaths and/or grave blankets are not permitted on Crypts in or near the Mausoleum or Columbarium.

  • All private mausoleums must be approved by the Cemetery in writing.

Niches:

  • A Niche means a place in a Columbarium or Mausoleum for placement of cremated human remains.  The number of human remains allowed to be inurned in a Niche is set forth in the Niche Grant.

  • All objects, including urns, must receive prior written Cemetery approval before placement in any Niche.

  • All urns or other vessels housing cremated human remains must have a nameplate or inscription identifying, by full name and date of death, the individual whose cremated human remains are contained in the urn or other vessel.

  • Nothing shall be attached to the front of any Niche without Cemetery approval.

  • The Cemetery must perform all engravings of Niche fronts.

  • No photographs of any kind will be allowed within or on the front of any Niche except photographs installed by the Cemetery.

  • Only the Cemetery will perform all inurnments of cremated human remains.

Wire and ribbon are not permitted to be used or attached to any niche front or used anywhere within the Mausoleum.

  • All artificial flowers, when faded or unsightly, will be removed and disposed by the Cemetery, as it deems appropriate without any notice or any liability.  The Cemetery assumes no responsibility for any flowers left at a Niche.

  • Wreaths and/or grave blankets are not permitted on Niches in or near the Mausoleum or Columbarium.

This is an abridged set of Cemetery Rules and Regulations.  A complete set of Rules and Regulations governing the Cemetery may be obtained at the Cemetery office.  The Cemetery may amend these Rules and Regulations at any time without notice.
